Learning Objectives

  • Identify and pronounce common graphemes (short vowels, digraphs, blends).
  • Blend and segment CVC/CVCC/CCVC words using poster cues.
  • Apply patterns in decodable reading and everyday writing.
  • Build automaticity with a 5–8 minute daily routine.

Materials

  • 13-Pack Phonics Posters (mounted at eye level)
  • Dry-erase board or mini lapboards
  • Word cards or magnetic letters (optional)
  • Decodable passages (short, aligned to the day’s pattern)

Setup (3–5 min)

  1. Pick the day’s focus (e.g., sh, ch, or short a) and point to its poster.
  2. Pre-write 4–6 example words that isolate the target pattern.
  3. Place 1 decodable sentence/passage for a 1-minute read.

8–12 Minute Daily Routine

  1. Sound Lift (2 min): Point-say the grapheme(s) on the poster. Students echo and air-trace letters.
  2. Blend/Segment (3–4 min): Tap and blend 3–4 words (e.g., shop, fish, rash). Then segment one word into sounds.
  3. Apply in Print (2–3 min): Students write two new words using the pattern; underline the target letters.
  4. Read It (1–2 min): Quick decodable sentence/passage; highlight the pattern on a second read.
Sentence stems: “I see sh at the start.” • “This word has three sounds: /sh/-/o/-/p/.”

Differentiation

  • Support: Picture cues, Elkonin boxes, and teacher-modeled mouth shapes.
  • On-Level: Mix real/nonsense words for flexible decoding.
  • Advanced: Add two-syllable words with the pattern (e.g., rocket, basket for short vowels).

Assessment & Data

  • 1-minute check: Read 5 words; score accuracy and time weekly.
  • Dictation: 3 pattern words + 1 sentence (track common errors).
  • Fluency: second read of the same sentence with pattern highlighting.

Extensions & Crossovers

  • Word hunt in books: tally pattern hits on a sticky note.
  • Phonics to writing: 2-sentence mini-story using 3 target words.
  • Poster leaders: students teach one example to a partner.
