Learning Objectives

  • Recognize and produce letter sounds (consonants + short vowels).
  • Form letters correctly with consistent pencil grip and strokes.
  • Read and write high-frequency words (2–3 per week).
  • Demonstrate understanding of simple sentences and picture-supported texts.

Materials

  • Comprehensive Curriculum of Basic Skills — Kindergarten (workbook)
  • Pencils, crayons/markers, alphabet strip, and mini whiteboard
  • Word rings (for weekly sight words) and sticker chart (optional)

5-Day ELA Routine (10–20 minutes/day)

  1. Day 1 — Letters & Sounds: Introduce 2 letters (e.g., m, a). Air-trace, say sounds, complete letter pages. Picture sort: match images to beginning sounds.
  2. Day 2 — Handwriting: Model strokes; complete 1–2 handwriting pages. Write two target letters and one simple word (e.g., am).
  3. Day 3 — Sight Words: Teach 2–3 words (e.g., I, see, a). Build on word rings; write and read short sentences using those words.
  4. Day 4 — Read & Respond: Read a short passage/page; point to words while reading. Draw and label one detail from the text.
  5. Day 5 — Review & Play: Letter-sound bingo, word-hunt in the house/book, or sentence scramble using this week’s words.
Teacher tip: Use a timer for 8–10 minute blocks. Many short wins beat one long session.

Differentiation

  • Support: Tracing dots, hand-over-hand letter formation, picture cues for sounds.
  • On-Level: CVC building with magnetic letters (e.g., map, sit, bug).
  • Advanced: Add he, she, we to sight words and write 3–4 word sentences.

Assessment & Tracking

  • Quick checks: Say-the-sound for 6 letters (weekly).
  • Handwriting sample: Name + two target letters (Monday vs. Friday).
  • Sight word ring: Flip and read; add a star when read in 3 seconds or less.

Extensions & Crossovers

  • Label a drawing with 3 sound-out words.
  • Read decodable mini-books that feature this week’s letters/words.
  • Science tie-in: label parts of a plant or weather picture with phonetic spelling.
