Learning Objectives

  • Blend and segment CVC words (e.g., map, sun, pig).
  • Manipulate phonemes (substitute first, middle, last sounds).
  • Spell target words with letter tiles, then in print.
  • Build automaticity through 8–12 minute daily practice.

Materials

  • Gamenote Pocket Chart Kit (tiles + CVC cards)
  • Mini whiteboards or notebooks
  • 1–2 decodable sentences aligned to target vowels
  • Optional: sand tray or magnetic letters for tactile practice

Setup (3–5 min)

  1. Pick a focus vowel (e.g., short a). Place letter tiles for 4–6 CVC words.
  2. Set 2 picture cards to match the focus (e.g., cat, bag).
  3. Pre-write a decodable sentence (e.g., “Sam had a nap.”).
Tip: Color-code vowels vs. consonants for quick visual cues.

10–12 Minute Daily Routine

  1. Blend It (3 min): Point to each tile (left→right) and say sounds, then sweep to blend. Students echo: /m/ /a/ /p/ → map.
  2. Switch It (3–4 min): Change one tile to make a new word (map → mopmophop). Ask which sound changed.
  3. Write It (2–3 min): Dictate two CVC words; students spell on boards and underline the vowel.
  4. Read It (2 min): Read the short sentence together; circle target-vowel words on second read.

Differentiation

  • Support: Elkonin boxes and finger tapping for each sound; limit to 2 vowels at a time.
  • On-Level: Add blends/digraphs (e.g., ship, slug, trap).
  • Advanced: Move to CCVCC (e.g., stamp) and two-syllable compound words (sunset).

Assessment & Progress

  • 1-minute read: 5 CVC words—track accuracy and time weekly.
  • Dictation check: 3 words + 1 sentence (score sounds and formation).
  • Phoneme changes: how many correct switches in 60 seconds?

Extensions & Crossovers

  • Picture sort: match images to word families (-at, -ap, -an).
  • Story seeds: write a 2-sentence mini-story using 3 focus words.
  • Partner teach: students lead one switch-it round for peers.
