Two brothers, Wilbur and Orville Wright, who ran a bicycle shop, were so passionate about the mysteries of aviation that they quit their jobs and began working together to invent the first airplane. After developing a successful glider, the brothers started constructing an airplane with a gasoline engine and propellers, the first of its kind.
On December 17, 1903, after countless attempts, the Wright brothers decided it was time to test their invention. They journeyed to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, where they figured the ocean winds would help the plane fly. With the newly constructed airplane, the Flyer, Orville took the pilot’s seat while Wilbur ran alongside to balance the wing. Slowly, the Flyer picked up speed and lifted itself into the air, achieving the first powered flight! The first flight lasted twelve seconds. This moment sparked the birth of aviation.
Now, it’s your homeschooler’s turn to explore the world of aviation with this fun craft that combines creativity and learning! By building their own airplane, your child can experience the story of how modern airplanes came to be.
Materials per airplane:
☐ 2 large craft sticks
☐ 2 mini craft sticks
☐ 1 small wooden bead
☐ 1 wooden clothes pin
☐ Markers
☐ Glue (preferably fast drying)
Instructions:
Step 1:
Choose a color marker and decorate the craft sticks and clothespins to your liking.
Step 2:
Apply a dot of glue to the center of each large craft stick. Position the large sticks on either side of the clothespin to resemble airplane wings. Allow the glue to dry.
Step 3:
Glue the mini craft stick onto the back of the clothespin. This will be the tail of your airplane.
Step 4:
Glue the small wooden bead to the middle of the remaining mini craft stick and allow it to dry.
Step 5:
Stand your airplane upright. Glue the mini craft stick with the bead onto the top opening of the clothespin, holding it in place until the glue dries.
Step 6:
Head outside and let your plane take flight. Try flying it for several days in a row with different weather conditions to observe how various wind speeds and directions affect your flight. Enjoy letting your plane soar while exploring the world of aviation!
