Summer is an all-around favorite season for most people. In the U.S., it’s even more exciting for many of us since we get to celebrate Independence Day! The Fourth of July is a wonderful time for fun with friends and family. It’s exciting to celebrate our nation’s birthday, have fun with some Independence Day activities, cook out with family and friends, and enjoy some of the most delicious food.
For extra fun, we have put together several patriotic printables! We love printables as much as you do, and as homeschoolers, it’s only natural to capitalize on the possible learning moments. July Fourth is an excellent learning opportunity!
Science Independence Day Activities
A fun STEM activity to tap into the patriotic vein involves a red, white, and blue chemical reaction. What kid doesn’t love those? To do this exciting experiment, you need the following materials:
Cardstock paper
Scissors
Large jar
Duct tape
Dish soap
Baking soda
Vinegar
Red and blue food coloring
Large tray
Cut a piece of card stock paper big enough to fit across the center of your jar, and as tall as the jar. Cut another piece of card stock paper the same height but only half as wide, so you can divide the jar into three sections. Use the duct tape to attach the pieces together, and place the divider inside the jar. It doesn’t have to be exact to work. Add a few tablespoons of baking soda to each section. By squeezing some dish soap onto each section of baking soda, it will help the reaction last longer and become fizzier. After adding the dish soap, add some red food coloring into one section and blue into another.
Place the jar on the tray, and begin adding the vinegar in very small increments to each section. Watch as the colors rise to the top and begin to swirl together. Continue adding vinegar until the reaction ends. If you want to get a bit more life out of the experiment, rotate the vinegar and baking soda.

Blast a patriotic playlist! If you need song suggestions, Apple Music, Spotify, or YouTube will have you covered.
Pull out your red, white, and blue, and wear patriotic outfits.
Attend your local parade.
Have access to a pool? Take advantage! Lounge around and cool off, then play some fun pool games together.
Visit a National Park or other historical landmark and learn more about our nation’s history.
These are just a few ideas to get you started. There is so much your family can do!
