There are many reasons for students to learn about Martin Luther King Jr. Despite the challenges he faced, Martin Luther King, Jr. never gave up on his dream of a more just and equitable society. His courage, determination, and commitment to nonviolence continue to inspire people around the world.

He was born Michael King, Jr., on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia.

He was a gifted student and skipped two grades in high school.

He attended Morehouse College, where he studied sociology and philosophy.

He was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1948.

He was inspired by the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi and helped to lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

He helped to organize the March on Washington in 1963, where he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

He was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee.

He is remembered as one of the most important figures in the American civil rights movement.

His birthday is celebrated as a national holiday in the United States every year on the third Monday in January.
