Learn About the Calendar With Free Resources
The start of a new year is an excellent time to teach your children about the calendar. Fortunately, there are many free resources available online for learning about the calendar. Below you’ll find materials for learning the days of the week, months of the year, and how to use a calendar. For older children and teens, there are also videos about the history of the calendar.
Printable Calendars
Coloring Calendar– This calendar, created by Kindergarten Worksheets and Games, begins in November 2022, runs through May 2024, and is updated annually. The month, year, and dates are traceable. Each month also has a picture to color.
Bulletin Board Calendar Pack– You can use this printable pack from Free Homeschool Deals to create a large teaching calendar on a bulletin board or poster board. The set includes month of the year cards, number cards 1-31, and title cards such as “Today is,” “Tomorrow is,” and “This month is.”

Weather Tracking– At Superstar Worksheets, you’ll find several calendars and charts to use for tracking each day’s weather.

Days of the Week Handwriting– Children can practice writing the days of the week in cursive or print with these tracing worksheets from Superstar Worksheets.

Months of the Year

The History of the Calendar
While your younger children are learning calendar basics, your older children and teenagers may enjoy learning about the calendar’s history with some of these videos on YouTube. Please be aware that these videos may not be appropriate for younger children or all families. The videos mention Roman gods, Germanic gods, astrological signs, and the menstrual cycle, all in relation to the format of calendars and how the days and months got their names.
