Learning Objectives

  • Identify the day’s ELA learning target in student-friendly language.
  • Practice one focused Grade 3 skill (e.g., main idea, context clues, prefixes/suffixes).
  • Demonstrate understanding via a 5–7 minute exit check.
  • Self-assess progress using the “I Can” card scale ().

Materials

  • Carson Dellosa CCSS Grade 3 Kit (ELA cards + pocket chart)
  • Dry-erase board or notebook for practice
  • Timer (for tight transitions)
  • Optional: sticky notes for quick reflections

Setup (3–5 min)

  1. Post today’s “I Can” card at the top of the pocket chart.
  2. Add 2–3 example cards (model, guided, independent).
  3. Place exit-check cards or slips at the bottom row for quick collection.
Pro Tip: Color-code days of the week (e.g., Mon: vocab, Tue: comprehension, Wed: grammar).

20-Minute Lesson Flow

  2. Model (5 min): Think-aloud with 1 short passage or sentence set. Highlight or underline evidence.
  3. Guided Practice (5–7 min): Do 2–3 items together. Learners explain why an answer fits.
  4. Independent (3–4 min): One quick problem on a whiteboard or notebook.
  5. Exit Check (2 min): Collect answers + self-rating ( mastered / almost / need more).
