Overview

Alaska funds home education through district correspondence schools. Families enroll with a district program, build an ILP with an advisor/teacher, and receive a student allotment for approved educational items and services (curriculum, tutoring, tests, some technology, etc.). Funds are not a cash stipend—purchases must be pre-approved and align to the ILP under state regulations.

See the AK Department of Education & Early Development’s Correspondence Schools overview and the official Regulations (PDF).

FAQs

Can allotment funds pay private school tuition?
No. Districts generally do not approve private school tuition with allotment funds. Programs restrict spending to allowable educational uses tied to the ILP.
How are purchases approved and reimbursed?
Families request pre-approval and either place vendor orders through the program or submit receipts for reimbursement. Items must align to the ILP and program/DEED rules.
Can my student take classes at a local public school?
Many districts allow part-time enrollment for courses or activities while enrolled in correspondence; allotments may be prorated. Ask your program about current options.
