Why is Making 10 so Important?
In the U.S., we use a base ten system for counting and numbers. Developing the concept of making ten is key to unlocking place value {think hundreds, tens, and ones}. It is also helps with the ability to do math problems without a calculator {sometimes called “mental math”}, no matter how big the numbers may be.
For example, if learners know 7 + 3 = 10, it can help them mentally solve 7+ 5 as they break down 7 + 3 with 2 leftover for 12. Knowing 7 + 3 could also help learners mentally solve 97 + 3 as they think 90 + 7 + 3.

Dr. Seuss Making 10 Hats
Today, I’m sharing some fun printable striped hats, perfect for Dr. Seuss-themed learning and making 10!
Before learners sort and build the hats, cut apart the hat pieces as seen in the image below.
Learners lay out the equals ten and doesn’t equal 10 hat bases in a workspace such as a table top, pocket chart, or floor. The rest of the hat pieces should be shuffled so that the number sentences that equal ten and those than don’t are all mixed together.
If you’d prefer, a blank hat “mat” has been provided on page three of the download.
Learners “read” each number sentence, then sort it as equal to ten or not equal to ten. For example, 1 + 9 is equal to 10, so it should be stacked on top of = 10. Note: You’ll find twelve number sentences in all to make four different hats in the download.
Once they’re complete, you’ll have some Dr. Seuss-themed hats that are equal or not equal to ten. Have fun!
