Planning lessons around holidays, historical events, and seasonal themes can be a fun way to homeschool. It’s an excellent way for kids to learn about the world around them, including topics that aren’t usually covered in a textbook. Our family has enjoyed occasionally adding seasonal and holiday-themed lessons to our homeschool routine.

Groundhog Day is a popular tradition celebrated in the United States. According to legend, if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day sees its shadow, we will have six more weeks of winter. However, spring will arrive early if it does not see its shadow.

Elizabeth Blackwell’s Birthday (February 3rd)

Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States, was born on February 3, 1821.

National Create a Vacuum Day (February 4th)

National Create a Vacuum Day is a day to learn about the science behind vacuums and create one. A vacuum is a space completely empty of matter.

Rosa Parks Day (February 4th)

Civil Rights hero, Rosa Parks, was born on February 4, 1913. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama, after refusing to give up her bus seat to a white passenger. Some states observe Rosa Parks Day on the anniversary of her arrest rather than her birthday.

Weatherperson’s Day (February 5th)

Weatherperson’s Day recognizes people in the fields of meteorology, weather forecasting, and broadcast meteorology, as well as volunteer storm spotters and observers. It is observed on the birthday of John Jeffries, one of the United States’ first weather observers.

Disaster Day (February 5th)

Massachusetts’s Statehood (February 6th)

Chinese New Year (February 10th)

Chinese New Year, also called the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, is the festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the Chinese lunar calendar.  The Chinese New Year begins at the new moon that falls between January 21st and February 20th.

National Umbrella Day (February 10th)

National Umbrella Day honors the simple invention that protects its users from rain and provides shade.

National Inventors’ Day (February 11th)

National Inventors’ Day is a day set aside to honor the contributions of inventors throughout history. The date was chosen because Thomas Edison was born on February 11, 1847.

Judy Blume’s Birthday (February 12th)

Fat Tuesday / Mardi Gras (February 13th)

Fat Tuesday  / Mardi Gras is traditionally a day when Christians use up the foods or beverages they plan to abstain from during the season of Lent. In some places, Mardi Gras is a week-long festival. Fat Tuesday is also sometimes called Shrove Tuesday.

Pancake Day (February 13th)

Fat Tuesday is also known as Pancake Day in some parts of the world. Many Christians eat pancakes on this day because it’s the perfect food to eat before giving up fats, eggs, and sweets for the season of Lent.

Ash Wednesday (February 14th)

Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, is observed in many Christian churches. The day gets its name from the blessing of the ashes taken after the burning of palm branches from the previous year’s Palm Sunday celebrations. In some churches, the ashes are used to draw a cross on people’s foreheads to mark the beginning of their Lent fast.

Lent (February 14th to March 28th)

Lent is the 40 days (not including Sundays) from Ash Wednesday to the Saturday before Easter. It’s a time when Christians commemorate the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert. Many Christians fast from certain foods or choose something to give up during Lent.

Valentine’s Day (February 14th)

On Valentine’s Day, people express their love for each other with cards and gifts. St. Valentine was a priest during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II banned soldiers from getting married, Valentine disagreed with him and continued to perform marriages. As a result, he was executed on February 14, 270 A.D.

National Ferris Wheel Day (February 14th)

National Ferris Wheel Day is set aside to remember the inventor of the Ferris wheel, George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. He was born on February 14, 1859. The first Ferris wheel debuted at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

Washington Monument Dedicated (February 21st)
