Holidays are necessary so that both kids and homeschooling parents can take a much-needed break. Holidays are great times to rest the brain and the body and focus on having a good time and spending quality time with each other. But, it can be a little bit of an uphill climb to return cold turkey after the holidays.
Homeschools can be full of tears and unmotivated learners after coming off of their favorite break of the year! But, we have a few ideas for you on how to combat that return from the holidays with ease. Check out our tips and relevant resources below on Restarting Your Homeschool After the Holidays!
Take it easy
That’s right. Just ease into it. Even if you’re the homeschooling parent, you probably feel that inward groan as well as it comes time to start teaching and learning once again after a nice cozy holiday. So, take it slow. Start with a few fun activities like review games to refresh your child’s memory and slowly get them back in the game.
Don’t be idle in the holidays
Keep academic activities going a little bit throughout the holiday. For example, make sure your child is reading every day or even read with them! Create a few holiday-themed games or use holiday baking in lessons that will keep their minds sharp and ready and stimulated.
Take stock of your progress
It’s the middle of the year, so it’s time to evaluate and think about the direction the next “semester” will go in. Check out the post Benefits of a Mid-Year Homeschool Evaluation to help encourage you and get you started! That way, when you restart your homeschool, you’ll be ready and organized for an effective Spring! Plus, you can encourage your kids once they come back from the break by showing them how much they’ve advanced!
Look forward to a new goal
Sometimes we just need a sort of exciting end goal to keep us going when we’re feeling down. Think of something or somewhere you as a homeschool want to get to that will help motivate your children to get back into the swing of things.
Maybe there’s a really exciting project they’ve been wanting to do or maybe there’s a great field trip you’ve been wanting to take. Use these as incentives to help bring that old energy back to the classroom.
Be patient and understanding
No one likes to have to start work again once the holiday is over. That’s why they call it the ” post-holiday blues”. But, take courage that it too shall pass! You will get through the slump and be back in business in no time!
We know that it’ll be tough to find your old rhythm once the holidays are over, but don’t worry, you’ll get there! And be sure to enjoy a restful holiday with your family!
