Planning lessons around holidays, historical events, and seasonal themes can be a fun way to homeschool. It’s an excellent way for kids to learn about the world around them, including topics that aren’t usually covered in a textbook. Our family has enjoyed occasionally adding seasonal and holiday-themed lessons to our homeschool routine.

National Zoo and Aquarium Month (all June)

National Zoo and Aquarium Month honors the role that zoos and aquariums play in the conservation and research of animal and fish species. Celebrate with a trip to your local zoo or aquarium.

National Dairy Month (all June)

National Dairy Month began as National Milk Month in 1937 to promote drinking milk. It was initially created to stabilize dairy demand when production was at a surplus but is now an annual tradition that celebrates the contributions of the dairy industry. Additionally, June 1st is World Milk Day.

National Rose Month (all June)

National Rose Month celebrates the beauty and symbolism of the popular flower. This month has been observed since 1959.

Turkey Lovers Month (all June)

Turkey Lovers Month is a great time to try a new turkey recipe. The month encourages us to eat turkey throughout the year, not just on Thanksgiving.

National Fishing and Boating Week was initiated by Take Me Fishing, a branch of the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, to encourage seasoned anglers to share their love and knowledge of fishing with others and increase participation in recreational fishing and boating. The week is the first full week of June.

National Doughnut Day (June 2nd)

National Doughnut Day was created by The Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938 to honor their members who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. The holiday is observed on the first Friday of June. Many doughnut shops offer free doughnuts or discounts on this day.

Daniel Boone Day (June 7th)

Daniel Boone Day is observed on June 7th because on this day, in 1769, frontiersman Daniel Boone was the first American to see the valleys and forests of present-day  Kentucky.

Anne Frank’s Birthday (June 12th)

Annelies “Anne” Frank was born on June 12, 1929. She was a Jewish girl who hid from the Nazis with her family during the occupation of the Netherlands. After two years, they were discovered. Anne died in 1945 in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Anne is well-known for the diary she kept while in hiding, later published as The Diary of a Young Girl.

Juneteenth (June 19th)

Juneteenth commemorates the effective end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed. This occurred two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Helen Keller’s Birthday (June 27th)

Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880. Keller became blind and deaf at 19 months old. The inspiring story of how she overcame her disabilities and learned to communicate has been widely told in books, plays, and films. She was the first deaf and blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Paul Bunyan Day (June 28th)

Paul Bunyan Day is dedicated to one of America’s most famous folklore heroes. Stories about Paul Bunyan, a giant lumberjack accompanied by a blue ox, first began circulating in the 18th century among lumberjacks in the Northeastern United States and Eastern Canada.
